Printmaking is perhaps the only discipline within visual arts that has held
\nonto its traditional conventions. It has strong traditions in the production: of
\nusing certain types of media as a work\u2019s master copy, and where the final
\nproduct, as a matter of principle, is printed. As the discipline itself
\nemerged as a response to artists\u2019 boredom with older mediums, it was
\nnatural and necessary to explore other materials and employ more
\nspecific techniques, such as lithography, etching, mezzotint, aquatint,
\nlinocut, woodcut, serigraphy\/silk screen, and stenciling.<\/p>\n

In this new phase, printmaking further developed and differentiated itself.
\nThe choice of printmaking material was completely freed from the traditional
\nprintmaking code of ethics. All editions and print series are now
\nconsidered original works, whereas previously artists would produce and
\ndistinguish between different editions or duplicates printed on paper.
\nPrintmaking techniques eventually spread to other art disciplines as a
\nresult of adaptation to technological developments, namely digital
\nprinting.<\/p>\n

In essence, this is how artists have a commitment to exploring their
\nchosen medium, as shown by the artists in this exhibition, both the choice
\nof using media, techniques and ideas. This kind of spirit was
\nre-interpreted by the Canda printmaking group (Andika, Angga Sukma
\nPermana, Fikri, Mahendra Pampam, and Putra Eko Prasetyo) which was
\nstimulated through “Viagra” (via graphic media),. Inspired by the
\nwidespread use of the term \u201cViagra\u201d (performance-enhancing drug),<\/p>\n

the Canda group regards printmaking as a spring from which they extract
\na desire to create. It gives the impression that printmaking necessitates a
\n\u2018drive\u2019 in its intention, continuity, and approach towards materiality as well
\nas technique; not all too dissimilar to the \u2018drive\u2019 that the eponymous drug
\nprovides.<\/p>\n

The Canda group presents their exhibition concept under the sheath of
\nmockery. The group\u2019s members are graduates of the fine arts department
\nof ISI Yogyakarta, which has a tradition of students mocking each other
\nwith non-serious insults that serve to awaken the creative spirit.<\/p>\n

What these graphic artists are conveying are actually responses resulting
\nfrom their sensitivity to their individual experiences and views on daily life
\n\u2013 thoughts accumulating in the mind and anchored to the soul, then
\nmade to form meaningful aesthetics. The works Kelompok Canda are
\npresenting helps us read more deeply into contemporary issues, as they
\nreflect the artists\u2019 concern for the environment, self, and social
